Angelo STURIALE
In residency at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Zaragoza, Centro para la difusíon de la música contemporanea de Madrid, in Spain.artistic project
Angelo Sturiale is presently working on a plan for an opera, Letto di Ferro, based on a libretto by the Sicilian Francesco Carapezza, inspired by Jean Genet's novel Pompes Funèbres. Three events at which he was present in Zaragoza have influenced the conception and the compositon of Scena di Martha, created during Angelo Sturiale's residence. Listening to Goyescas, a work by Enrique Granados sung by the impressive Maria Bayo, daily meetings with two passionate accordion players along the road leading to the Conservatory and, finally, the discovery of a group of foreign musicians whose string instruments seemed to witness to a profound melancholy. From these experiences came the composition of the orchestra : a female voice, three string quartets, four brass and four percussion instruments, and an accordion. Scena di Martha is stamped with the popular atmosphere of Zaragoza, with gypsy folklore and the way in which these individuals whom he met during his residence play their instruments.
