Anthony BURNHAM

In residency at the Departamento de Escultura - Universitat Politècnica de València in Spain.

artistic project

During the residency in Spain, The Flators presented two projects. The first titled Parking (the action of parking) an inflatable car in the city was presented within a exhibition entitled"What is sculpture today ?".
For the second project, Bathroom Action, they investigated a new type of site : public toilets. Each visitor received a bag containing a plastic sculpture to be blown up with a hand dryer. Acting as an extension of the hand dryer, the sculpture, filled with hot air, lets the air escape through two holes allowing two people to dry their hands simultaneously. This cubic sculpture becomes a relational object and the toilets a space for meetings around the object. The work of the Flators creates a micro-event around an unusual object. The public can take the sculpture away, re-use it and share it with other users, thus extending the action into other spaces.

residence

The Bathroom Action Kits were produced in the plastics studio of the university, which allowed The Flators to develop new ways of assembling them. The Bathroom Action intervention was shown at the Josep Renau Gallery of the Fine Arts Faculty of Valencia's Universidad Politécnica in January 2003, and by the Instituto de la Juventud in the Amadis Gallery in Madrid in March 2003.
